The Screen Actors Guild is a union. It's a union of actors, producers and crew. The union itself does not make movies. SAG enforces minimum wages, collects and distributes residuals, enforces standard working conditions and offers health care. In Los Angeles and New York, most productions are "closed shops". That means you must be a member of the SAG union to participate as an actor, or that minimum numbers of SAG members must be hired before non-union actors are hired. You need to have a credit as principal from a SAG production to become a member. So, it's a bit difficult to join when you need SAG credits, but cannot work unless you are a SAG member. Often it's easier to get SAG credits in a state where SAG cannot operate as a "closed shop". You can get credits on SAG projects, then become a member and pursue roles in New York or Los Angeles. You can also sometimes get credits by working as an extra. Conversely, SAG members are not to participate in non-union projects. The Screen Actors Guild refers to this a rule one. That provides the encouragement for most major productions to become SAG productions. Any production that is non-union has eliminated a large segment of the working actors from casting. In addition to the credit requirement to join, there are union dues. A onetime initiation fee is charged to join. Yearly dues must then be paid to remain a member of the Screen Actors Guild. A similar union is the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists or AFTRA. While SAG covers the film industry, AFTRA covers television and radio. AFTRA provides the same protections for those working in the mentioned mediums. Actors are a rare breed of people. They are shy but bold, introverted yet welcoming, open and closed at the same time. To say that actors are emotionally conflicted is an understatement. On stage, actors are bold, confident, self-assured. They come across a huge gulf and reach out to strangers in order to communicate an idea, a character, and an emotion. Actors long to take you with them on their adventure. Yet, to know an actor is to know someone who is painfully shy, who is certain that no one remembers them, and who, themselves, never forget a face. We train actors to project their voices and their character's personalities. We teach them how to turn so that the audience can see them. We teach them how to interact with other characters on stage, how to get themselves and their castmates out of trouble, how to be on time... all of those things. And actors can accomplish this inside the structure of the production and inside the structure of the theatre, but rarely do they do this in their day to day lives. It does not come naturally to them. Actors are not accustomed to being accepted by the mainstream, and it shows. The successful, genial actor will develop a 'public character' (as we all do, to a certain extent) in order to get by in life. The difference between actors and the rest of us is that actors are usually aware of the role they play in real life and the rest of us are not. Actors are the sensitive kids who either stand out or feel as though they stand out from their peers... and not in a good way. They are unaccepted, easily hurt, reluctant to join in. Girls are often painfully shy, and very bright over-achievers. Boys are often in trouble for speaking out, being the class clown, and known to be hard to handle. Normally, there are only one or two per class like this, usually only one boy. These kids try soccer, hockey, Scouts, Girl Guides, and a myriad of other organised sports or clubs, to no avail. Their natural tendencies toward shyness and an imaginary world, or toward boldness and attention-seeking don't often meld well with those sorts of things. The child is again an outcast, or in the case of girls, has cast herself out. So what do actors need? They need the same thing that everyone else needs. They need what hockey-players and Girl Guides and the Church Women's League needs. Actors need community. Amateur productions usually rehearse from four to six weeks in advance of opening night, some more, some less. Professional productions normally rehearse for two intense weeks. During that time, but especially during the run of the show, the cast can form close bonds, become friends, and share a common goal. They form a community. They become a team. For someone who is not used to being a welcome addition to most teams, this is a very gratifying and emotional experience, although it is short-lived. When the show is finished, they experience a huge sense of loss; loss of friends, loss of work, and loss of self. Actors are aware that their community may only last for six or eight weeks, and many will only be cast in one show per year. It can be heartbreaking for them to realise that their sense of belonging is so fleeting. It is important for actors to take charge of their own happiness. They really can build community around them, even if they are not working on a production. If you practice acting confident for at least part of your day every day, you will notice a difference in a month. How does a confident person stand, sit, and walk? How do they look at a person? A confident person will look you directly in the eyes, won’t they? How do they speak? They don’t use a small voice, do they? A confident person is not afraid to ask for things, or to speak with strangers. If you have somewhere to go like a job interview or on a date, take a few minutes before you go to daydream how a confident person would do it. Do you have a role model? Perhaps there is someone in the movies or life that you wish you were more like. How would they handle the situation? Have fun in the privacy of your home play-acting. Sometimes you can rehearse situations with a friend to help you with your confidence. This is great for becoming comfortable with job interviews or dealing with customers. Practice and familiarity makes us feel confident. If you would like to become good at job interviews, you could also apply for many jobs, even ones you don’t want. At first you may feel nervous, but your purpose is not to get a job, it is to get more comfortable and better at impressing others favorably. The more interviews you do, the less they intimidate you and the more confident you will be. With practice, before long, you will be very successful at getting job offers. A great deal of how we appear to others consists of how we appear to ourselves. When we are nervous or not confident in ourselves, it often causes others to have less faith in us as well. If we believe we are beautiful, others will see our beauty. If we believe we are valuable to them, others will see our value. Always remind yourself of your qualities and the good you have to offer. It takes a highly skilled actor to convey a lively character through voice alone. Voice talent play a crucial role in the success or failure of an animated film. This is a well-known fact, especially in Hollywood. A good voice actor is hard to find because it takes a special person to be able to captivate an audience and suspend their disbelief using only their voice. Unlike stage and film actors who are able to draw upon their physical appearances to communicate and give subtle cues through body language, voice talent perform off-camera which presents a new set of challenges. What makes voice acting harder than stage acting? As mentioned before, voice actors cannot use their body to convey their emotions. Instead, emotion has to be conveyed by factors such as: tone, phrasing and cadence. Finding the right voice to breathe life into a character takes skilled direction, a great character sketch and a good storyline. One example of great voice casting is the groundbreaking CGI film, Toy Story (1995), featuring the voices of Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear. Without their talent and ability to engage millions of people spanning several generations, Toy Story might not have been considered a classic with regard to CGI films. Hanks was able to turn Woody into a real character, a cowboy desperately afraid of being forgotten by someone he loved and Allen managed to make Lightyear come off as an authentic, developed character with a real personality. Without his voice work, Buzz Lightyear may have been perceived to be as fake as the plastic packaging he came in. Movies like Shrek and Finding Nemo became great because the actors who voiced the characters struck a chord in the audience and made a real connection. It takes a lot of talent to make characters that aren't human or who live in fantastical worlds connect emotionally with people living in our society today. Animators are nourished by voice actors, and together, they are able to give a character a lease on life all its own and create something magical. The biggest and simplest tip that you can be given, is to first of all set your expectation level about breaking into the acting industry. If you want to become an actor or actress, you must be prepared that you will be entering into a very cut throat industry, and the likelihood of you becoming a Hollywood star overnight is virtually zero. Therefore, if you can start an acting career with an open mind, and with the expectation that your journey is going to be long and hard to become an established and well-known actor, you are already on your way to becoming successful. If you are not sure whether you will enjoy acting as a full-time career, the first recommendation is that you look for a role as a film extra. There are many sites on the Internet where you can enroll to acting websites for free, and there are always plenty of opportunities of becoming a film extra. You will not be paid a great deal of money, but it will give you an insight and a feel of what working in the movie industry is really like. The days will be long, and there will be a lot of waiting around until you are ready for your 5 seconds of 'fame', but if you enjoy the experience of being a film extra, you will be far more likely to continue pursuing an acting career. Once you have established whether the acting industry is for you, it would then be advisable to enroll in a few acting lessons, just to learn the basics requirements of acting. Again there are many acting schools or drama schools, which can be found in your local area, who do not charge the earth. If you are serious about becoming an actor, then this would be a well worth investment and a good foundation for your acting career to associate with an acting school such as Child Actor LA for children. When you are starting a new career in acting, it will take time to develop an acting style of your own. To be a successful actor, you have to offer something unique, so that you will stand out from others. So while you are developing your own style of acting, it may be worth while studying other successful actors to establish what makes them so successful. For example, you can start with your favorite actor. Watch as many movies starring your favorite actor as you can. Take careful attention to how they move, what their posture is like and how they deliver their lines in each movie. Ask yourself why you actually like the actor, what draws you to them? Do they use the same acting style in each of their movies or do they vary the acting style? As part of the research into successful actors, it's also important to establish how long have they been successful for. Have they been acting for decades, or are they new to the acting scene? There will be some actors who will be very successful, but only for a short while. This could be because they have been noticed purely for their looks, and not for their acting ability. Then when the looks start to fade, there is nothing left to secure a successful or long career. It is important to study as many different styles of acting as you are able - it is surprising how much information you can glean, simply by watching other actors. However, you have to remember to get noticed in the acting industry, you will have to be original. Therefore, it is no point copying someone else's acting style and mannerisms, as you will not be unique. Using the above techniques will help you to start gaining acting experience. Once you have gained experience and are feeling more confident, then you can choose which route your wish your career to take and which fits in with your career plan. Contact at (949) 577 9255 and know about Child Actor LA Summer Camps and Child Actor LA Admissions dates In this film acting review we would like to touch more on the foundation of acting in film and what is expected out of a actor to succeed in this industry. Film Acting is the process of pretending, unselfconsciously, in front of a camera. Film acting is oceans apart from acting for the stage. When first start acting it is all about urgency and immediacy in which certain actors express their self-hood and push the limits of expressiveness and, most importantly, how actors create a living, breathing character from the words on the page of a script. Film acting is surprisingly difficult, fresh, new and different. Acting as we know it, did not begin until the 16th century in Italy when actors worked together to perform a type of story. Acting is an art form, and any art form is served by the variety of perspectives, opinions, and cultures of its participants. Film acting develops the whole person: intellectually, emotionally, physically. Acting for film requires a talented performance, but it has the "luxury" of re-shooting scenes until they are, in the eye of the director, ideal. Actors need to practice their craft to improve and to grow as artists once the beginning stages of how to get into acting is learned. Actors do a disservice to themselves as artists when they judge the quality of the material as a litmus test for whether they will employ technique. Actors will work on roles ranging from Day Player to Guest Star to Series Regular. Actors are normally at the core of narrative film, and they bear one of the primary responsibilities of telling the film's story. Acting on the stage and for the camera are the same, the differences between stage and film acting is proportions. Film acting is kind of a paradoxical experience. The Star reminds us that film acting isn't exactly the same as Theatre acting, since an elusive charisma puts the performance across. Thinking of cinema as a performance-based art, for example, doesn't commit you to saying that film acting is the same as theatrical acting. Since film acting is the main resource we have for tracking our famous actors, the ones we have in common to talk about; we have to have a way of viewing that allows us to get a real sense of what's taking place on the screen. This is the way film acting is supposed to work. If your child is interested in acting career you can enroll him with the Child Actor LA - Children Acting lessons for life Skills.
